Snowfall woke. It was early in the morning and the sun was still appearing ove the horizon. Snowfall stood and stretched a little before trotting down to the nearby river for a drink. On her way, she enjoyed the songs of the birds and the cool fresh air. Finally, she made it to the river and took a sip. Afterwards, she trotted down to the grazing spot.
It was bare and yellow.

Balios woke up, one of the first that morning. It was summer, his very favorite of the seasons. He smiled to himself and looked around to see who else was awake. He could see the outline of a horse down at the grazing spot so he trotted towards it giving a nicker as a greeting. As he got closer he could see it was Snowfall.

Snowfall lifted her head and nickered back. She saw that it was Balios and cantered towards him, slowing to a walk as she got closer. Eventually, she was standing a few feet in front of him, trying to stay as far away as she could without being offensive. She was in heat and didn't quite want him smelling it, thoughs he had a feeling he could.

"Hello" Balios nickered to her when she came to a stop near him. He couldn't smell the heat scent at that moment but when he took a step forward towards her to close the gap between them by a little he got a whiff of it.

Snowfall smiled and didn't notice the fact that he was a step closer. "Hello, Balios." She rested her weight on three legs while the other one took a few minutes off. "What are you up to?"

Balios smiled back at her inhaling the scent of her heat a little. "Nothing much, I just woke up and saw you so I decided I'd go and say hello. What about yourself?" he asked her with a toss of his mane.

Snowfall thought. "Um, not much. Just grazing. Found that a majority of our food source is dead though." She, realizing that Balios was smelling her, clamped her tail down to try and hide it, even though it was no use. Of course her expression didn't show it. "You want to see it?" She looked towards the huge patch of yellow. "Right there."

Balios looked towards the patch of dry yellow grass. "Summer always has to be so dry. Its a pity apart from that its my favorite season" he said smiling at her. "Maybe there's nicer grass down by the river" he said.

Snowfall shook her head sadly. "No. It's all dead to... and the river is now a stream. I saw it all this morning. Most of our food is dried up." She waited for Balios to say something, wondering what he would do in this situation.

"Woah, thats pretty bad" Balios said in surprise, usually the grass and river only dried up lateron in summer never this early. "Lets hope we get some rain soon" he said looking up at the sky hopefully.

Snowfall looked at the sky. No clouds in sight. Not even the smallest wisp. "Um, I don't think we'll have rain anytime soon." She kept her tail clamped down tight as she trotted forward, passing the stallion and going towards the used-to-be-river-but-now-a-stream. She looked down at the small trickle of water running through. "We don't want to dry this up. We may not have rain for a very long time."

Balios nodded from seeing the sky he hadn't thought so either. He trotted after her towards what was once a river but now a mere stream. He gazed downwards at it, this was bad. "We definitely don't want it to dry up" he said obviously agreeing strongly.

Snowfall layed down and put her hooves where the river used to go up to which was about ten or so feet away from where the water was now. She sighed and put her head down low to sniff at it. Dry. No trace of water at all.

Balios watched Snowfall at the edge of the stream, in the old now dry river bed. "Say do you think it might be a bit better further upriver... I mean upstream?" he asked turning to look upstream.

Snowfall looked up at Balios, still clinging her tail close to hide her scent. "I don't think so. There's nothing down there that could block it. The only thing causing this would probably be that it's too cold up in the mountains for snow or rain to melt and run down. That means, it's all solid ice up there."
